What is a Magnetic Tunneling Junction?

A Magnetic Tunneling Junction (MTJ from now on) is a relatively simple device: it consists on a spacer, typically Aluminium Oxide or Magnesium Oxide sandwiched by two ferromagnets, as depicted in figure 1:
